Donald Takeshita-Guy is an artist, story teller and curator living in South East London.
Using paint, moving images, digital media and installation his practice explores the narrow boundary between abstract and figurative art and examines how ambiguity might help us find our place in a world that is becoming increasingly strident and confrontational.
He works from ideas he finds deep inside his memories, and strives to find a sense of spontaneity and immediacy in his work whether he’s using a paint brush, a computer or a movie camera.
Since 2016 he’s been curating the RAUM gallery, a pop up space for exhibition and discussion . He applies what he’s learn from showing other people’s art to create constantly evolving sets of his own works.
In his “1000 Cats” series he uses abstract, figurative, and collaged elements to investigate the histories and conventions of modern painting. He combines self-consciously amateurish “bad” painting, expressive gestures and a surrealist attitude to reconfigures a limited set of elements in a diverse and absurdist way that challenges the viewer with unexpected shifts in aesthetics.
